What is adoption?
Adoption is a legal procedure which places a child with adoptive parents who will raise the child as a member of their own family.

How is adoption done?
The birth mother must make an adoption plan with an adoption counselor. In some areas, the father of the baby is also required to give consent. A couple wanting to adopt a child must apply and be accepted as prospective adoptive parents by a government approved agency. A thorough home study is done to ensure that the couple will be able to provide care and love for a child.

Am I selfish to consider adoption?
No, it means that you are concerned about being a good mother and that you realize that raising a child can be difficult. It's not selfish to choose what is best for you and your baby. Sometimes a birth parent is not ready to raise a child. You have already given LIFE to your child, the ultimate gift. It is a mature act of selfless love for your child.

What will others think of me for choosing adoption?
Those who care about you will understand. Most importantly, you will know that you have made the right and loving decision for you and your child.

When do I have to decide about adoption?
You can decide at any point in your pregnancy or after the baby is born. Most birth mothers choose to place their child for adoption before their child is born. If a woman wants, she can also place her child in foster care while she makes the decision. Many have found that making a commitment to adoption before birth makes the placement easier for the birth mother.

How do birth parents feel after placing a child for adoption?
It's normal to experience all kinds of emotions including grief, sadness, and loneliness. These feelings are a healthy part of life—it means you realize that there needs to be healing. Many birth mothers have said that they have peace because they know they made the best decision for themselves and their babies. There are counselors available through the adoption agencies who can help you through the time after you've placed your child with a family.

Will my baby be well taken care of?
Adoption agencies have long waiting lists of couple who are unable to have children and who are ready to love and raise a child. It's estimated that there are at least 15-20 couples waiting for every healthy infant available. Many families are also waiting to adopt babies born with handicaps.
